A recent Italian study sheds light on the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet on male fertility, emphasizing the crucial role of dietary choices in enhancing reproductive capacity. Published in the journal Food Science, the research explores the link between a specific nutrition plan, inspired by the Mediterranean diet, and improved testosterone levels and reduced sperm DNA fragmentation in sub-fertile men.


The study involved 50 sub-fertile men aged 35 to 45, who followed a tailored nutrition plan for three months between November 2020 and October 2021. The plan included 80% organic foods, whole grains, low glycemic load options, grass-fed meat, wild-caught seafood, leafy greens, and red fruits. Refined carbs and saturated fats were replaced with healthier options like olive oil, avocado, and nuts, while dairy products were reduced or eliminated.

The researchers noted that the Mediterranean diet’s emphasis on vegetables and fruits, rich in detoxifying and antioxidant substances, contributed to its positive impact on male reproductive health.


Men adhering to the Mediterranean-inspired food plan experienced a significant increase in testosterone levels. In a subgroup that reduced carbohydrate intake by 35%, sperm DNA fragmentation decreased, indicating improved DNA integrity. The study underscores the importance of dietary variation, with the researchers highlighting the association between a pre-conception Mediterranean diet, low in carbohydrates, and high in legumes, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables, and enhanced male fertility.


Despite the study’s limited size, the findings stress the significance of consuming quality foods for physical and psychological well-being. The researchers suggest that adopting a Mediterranean-inspired diet with a focus on organic foods may serve as a practical measure to bolster human resilience against environmental insults. These insights contribute to a growing body of knowledge on the connection between nutrition and reproductive health, offering hope and actionable steps for couples navigating fertility challenges.
